Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Opportunity for a USA, Canada, or International artist or artist team to create an original work of art to be permanently showcased at a Boston library. Artwork should reflect the designs and programmatic elements unique to the library when creating their proposal. Funding is intended for the creation of a permanent public artwork for the Adams Street Branch of the Boston Public Library.

Submissions should:

  • Align with the Curatorial Vision of the Boston Art Commission: The Curatorial Vision of the BAC is to commission and approve innovative and transformative artworks that engage communities, enrich and enliven the urban environment, are driven by an artistically strong vision, enhance the diversity of the existing collection, respond directly to a specific environment, and possess durability appropriate to the lifespan of the work.
  • Show consideration of the neighborhood, site, and theme.
  • Showcase a strong, original, artistic vision.
  • Demonstrate experience in public art that meets the expectations for this commission.

The Branch’s design and various spaces reflect the needs and desires of the community. Artist may wish to consider these design and programmatic elements to understand the community and inspire the artwork:

  • The project includes the protection of an oak tree that attendees of the first public meeting asked to be kept rooted in place on the grounds.
  • Ideas for increasing the sustainability of the development are already underway, including a plan to retain the stormwater generated on the site.
  • Additional teen and children’s spaces were central to the design.
  • The inclusion of a reading garden in addition to the other outdoor spaces was an important element for the branch users.
