Grants to USA, Canada, and International researchers for research studies addressing animal health. Funding is intended to support projects related to the health and well-being of senior canines. Areas of interest include mobility, frailty, nutrition, and end-of-life care.
The topic selected for the 2022 Request for Proposals (RFP) is senior dog health. An overview of the research themes emerged from a roundtable discussion of this topic by a panel of experts. These suggestions for possible research questions accurately reflect the Foundation's interests, and it is anticipated that successful projects will take these, or very closely related approaches. Projects involving more than one of the discussed areas are also welcome.
Proposals should demonstrate the unique and strategic nature of the proposed research and address how the project advances the field of senior dog health. Collaborative projects with the potential to rapidly translate findings to primary care practice are preferred.
Ages at which dogs are considered “senior” and their expected lifespans are breed/size-dependent — for example epigenetic (methylome) analysis indicated that Labrador retrievers are senior over 7 years of age, with an expected lifespan of 12 years. Senior dogs are plagued by a litany of poorly studied but significant diseases and conditions that, for whatever reason, have been largely neglected in terms of research.

COVID-19 Considerations: Research plans must include mitigation strategies for operational risks posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Alternative strategies for travel restrictions, pandemic related mandates, supply shortages, etc., should be included in the proposal.
Environmental Policy: Consideration should be given to reducing detrimental effects of research projects on the environment. Travel requests should be limited and well justified with respect to the project objectives. Means of transportation with the lowest possible carbon emissions are encouraged.
