New York University - Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute

Deadline Date:

01/31/18

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Awards of up to $12,500 to USA, Canada, and International journalists for a significant work of journalism in any medium on a public interest subject that has not been widely-reported. The awards are intended to underwrite the research and writing of a produced or published article which brings new understanding to an underreported and important public issue.

A “significant work of journalism” would be expected to probe a subject in considerable depth and length (5,000 words for a print piece). The project must have demonstrable prospects for timely completion and publication by the established deadline. Projects are selected based in part on the Institute's estimation of how likely the finished piece is to find a strong outlet for publication. One of the main purposes of the award is to fund a project that otherwise would not come to fruition.

Each winner will receive an advance on acceptance of the proposal and the signing of the agreement, and is eligible to receive the balance of the agreed-upon award on completion and publication of the Work by the November 1, 2018 deadline, provided the Institute’s Awards Committee judges the Work acceptable. The Committee will judge whether the Work is acceptable only after the Work is published in a reputable media outlet of wide circulation.

Number of Grants:

The Institute will select one or several winners of the Reporting Award.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Each winner may receive a different amount of money, at the discretion of the Committee. The maximum award is $12,500. The award is divided into two payments. Each winner will receive an advance of $2,500 on acceptance of the proposal and the signing of the agreement, and is eligible to receive the balance of the agreed-upon award on completion and acceptance of the Work by the November 1, 2018, deadline, provided the Institute’s Awards Committee judges the Work acceptable. The winner also has use of the Institute’s facilities as well as NYU’s libraries and other scholarly resources.

Term of Contract:

The completed project must be delivered no later than November 1, 2018.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Carter Journalism Institute welcomes applications from international journalists age 21 and older; you do not need to be a U.S. citizen nor do you need to reside in the U.S. to be eligible. However, the work that the award supports must be in English and must be accepted for publication by a reputable media outlet with a wide circulation. The publication does not need to be American based, but should be well known.

The Institute expects the Winner’s Work to meet a high degree of excellence. While The Reporting Award competition is open to all, with the exceptions noted below, the Institute especially encourages applications from professional journalists with a proven track record already working on projects that meet the competition’s guidelines.

Full-time staff writers employed by publications may apply for projects that their publication will not fund or publish. The judges will want to hear how they plan to put sufficient time into the project in order to report and finish the piece in a timely fashion while working full-time.

The award cannot be used to pay or book research; it is intended to support the research and writing of an article.

The Institute will not fund proposals to report from locations where there is conflict that might imperil journalists, nor will it support projects deemed by the Committee to have a high level of risk for the applicant.

Ineligible to apply are NYU affiliates, NYU graduates with degrees dated 2015 and thereafter, and journalists holding staff positions at established media outlets that are in a position to fund such projects on their own.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline for applying is January 31, 2018. Entries should not be considered complete until entrants receive a confirmation email.

A decision is expected on or about mid-April, 2018.
